The Caribbean

After taking care of getting the cars from Panama to Colombia, we were looking forward to our part – the yacht trip.

We spent two nights in a hostel in Panama City and went for a walk from the business neighbourhood with numerous skyscrapers to the old town with pretty colonial houses. The next day we got up at 4.30 a.m. to be ready for the 5 o’clock pick-up that arrived at six. We put our backpacks on the roof of the jeep and squeezed inside – there were eight of us, altogether – and set off for the journey to the port of Porvenir, although a bit nervous that the “taxi” driver didn’t know the name of our ship. When we reached the Kuna Yala region, it started to rain (our backpacks got wet) and the road turned into a roller coaster, going up and down and right and left through the surrounding jungle so we were considering taking the seasickness pills already. In the end we arrived to a lancha port and again, nobody here recognized the name of Manigua, our yacht. Still, we hopped on one of the boats with our soaked backpacks and went for Porvenir. We got soaked ourselves when we were bobbing on the waves of the open sea but surprisingly, the boater found Manigua and we managed to get aboard. The yacht looked good and we were looking forward to the sailing, although we were a bit upset from the journey here – both the taxi and the lancha were more expensive than we were told they would be.

However, then we realized that there would be thirteen people on the boat, nine passengers and four members of the crew, which seemed a lot for the size of it and it meant that there will be four of us sleeping in a cabin for two, and moreover they asked us to pay more, reasoning that they had to change the boat because the captain of the original one had quit and Manigua is newer and more spacious(!). All in all, considering how much we paid for the whole sailing trip, there were a lot of things we weren’t happy about.
Nevertheless, we stayed aboard. After some formalities (excluding the safety things, though, such as learning where the life vests are) we sailed off to one of the 368 islands of San Blas. We “parked” in calm waters between two islands where we were supposed to spend the following three nights. The islands were pretty as a picture in a travel magazine, with palm trees bowing above the white sand of the beach, and amazingly clear water with starfish on the ground.

The other passengers were laid-back young travellers, three guys from Australia and two Dutch girls, and after the first misunderstanding about the payment the crew turned out to be nice as well, so the company was alright, it was just the little space that mattered. The next day we stayed at the same place for the weather wasn’t good enough for sailing and we went snorkelling and saw a stingray and loads of colourful small fish and corral.

The third day – December 24th – we sailed to another travel catalogue island with even better snorkelling places and this time we were ready to try the seasick pills – and they worked! When we got back to “our” island we went over for a beer to celebrate the Christmas Eve but couldn’t drink much as the next day the boat was to start a 40-hour non-stop sailing to Cartagena, Colombia. It didn’t really feel like Christmas, anyway, with the coconut palms and sea around, and pleasant 25 degrees.

On the fourth day we went to visit yet another island and after good but little lunch (because the number of people really exceeded the maximal limit of the boat and the amount of food that fitted in the pots was yet another proof of it) we set off on the sailing journey on the open sea. We all took our lifesaving pills and got ready to suffer through it. The pills make you sleepy so most of us spent the journey lying down (this also helps against being sick), either in the cabin or on the deck (more fresh air).  At one point we saw dolphins jumping around the boat, at another some other big fish.

In the early morning of the sixth day we woke up to find ourselves in the port of Cartagena, with skyscrapers at one side and the domes of the old town churches at the other.

V Panama City jsme strávili dvě noci v hotelu a přes den si udělali výlet z obchodní čtvrti s podkovou mrakodrapů do starého města s koloniální architekturou. Druhý den jsme vstávali o půl páté ráno, abychom byli připraveni na vyzvednutí v pět. Taxi přijelo v šest a řidič nevěděl nic o naší lodi jménem Manigua.

Jednu chvíli nás doprovázeli delfíni a viděli jsme i kulohlavce.

Brzo ráno šestého dne jsme se probudili v cartagenském přístavu. Na jedné straně nás vítaly mrakodrapy a na druhé kopule kostelů starého města.
