Puebla, PUE, Mexico

Many things have happened since the last blog entry. We are still in Mexico but will travel the fastest possible way to Guatemala now... but first things first.

After leaving Leon we went to a little town of Tequisquiapan where we wanted to spend the night in a "balneario" - an aqua-park - since they also offered camping. But as we came there at about 8 o'clock in the evening, the place was already closed and we spent our first night in Mexico sleeping " outside", that is we parked the car in a small square in the city. And it worked well! Well, I couldn't fall asleep at first, listening to every little noise around but eventually I woke up in the morning :)

From this little town we wanted to go to San Juan Teotihuacan, a small town near Mexico City, with huge Mayan pyramids. But there it happened... When turning off the highway to San Juan Teotihuacan, already in the state of Mexico, a policeman stopped us and wanted to see "el permiso de importacion temporal del vehiculo", the permit for the car. After showing him the pink registration paper and our visas, we understood there is one more piece of paper, that is the permit for the car, and that we don't have it since they never told us about it when we crossed the border in Sonora. The fine for not having this was - according to the policeman - 5.800 pesos, some $500, plus they could take the car from us... As we didn't have so much money we kind of haggled and he said 3.000 pesos would be OK. Then I started to cry so he gave us 500 pesos back. Maybe I should have cried more ;) Anyway, for the 2.500 pesos he gave us a piece of paper with handwritten dates and told us we can stay in the state of Mexico until next Tuesday, that was some four days, and with this he let us go. Off we went, then. To be honest, we knew that there was some kind of paper for the car but since we went through the customs and payed for something (that in the end turned out to be only the touristic visas for us), and they let us go, we thought we had everything we needed. Apparently, we didn't. The weird thing is that when the police had stopped us before (and they had), they never wanted anything else than the pink registration paper proving the car is ours.

When we arrived to the RV Park in San Juan Teotihuacan (very nice, if you ever go this way), we sent an email to the Czech embassy in Mexico City, they gave us another email for the Mexican Custom Office, and these people told us that there is no way of obtaining the permit in the interior of the country, we can get it only at the borders. By then we were in Cholula where we also finally ordered the windscreen wiper and had to wait few more days to receive it, and since we stayed in an expensive and not so very nice RV Park there, we decided to find somebody through the hospitalityclub.org where Petr is a member. And we couldn't be luckier here. We found Claudia and her great family who all accepted us as if we were members of their family, they feed us and take us for trips and to the cinema, and the only thing we could do for them so far was a big pot of goulash... They also go out of their way to help us to fix that of the permit but apparently being Mexican doesn't help either when you have to deal with the Mexican officers. So now we are prepared to set off on the shortest possible way to Guatemala and hope that we will be able to get through to Guatemala although we'll probably need a proof of the cancellation of the Mexican permit we don't have so it may get even funnier.

On the bright side, we saw the pyramids in Teotihuacan, and more importantly, we went for a picnic to Popocatepetl with our new friends, and it was amazing. We were almost 4.000 metres above sea level, probably the highest I have ever been, and you could feel the lack of oxygen in the air. Both Popo and his sister, or better to say his lover - according to an old Mexican legend - are impressive, especially with el Popo blowing a cloud of smoke every now and then.

Off to Guatemala now...

Od posledního zápisu se toho hodně událo. Jsme ještě pořád v Mexiku, ale zítra budeme vyrážet nejkratší cestou do Guatemaly... Ale pěkně popořadě.

Z Leonu jsme dojeli do městečka Tequisquiapan, kde jsme chtěli přespat v "balneariu" - místním akvaparku, kde by taky mělo být možné kempovat.

A tady to všechno začalo...

A tady jsme konečně měli štěstí.

A teď hurá do Guatemaly...

Leon, GTO, Mexico

We have turned away from the coast into the centre of Mexico, and now (that is, Friday Oct 12) we are in Leon, the city of shoes.

From Mazatlan we went to a small village of San Blas but the mosquitoes made us leave the very next morning and we went to Sayulita, surfing town with more tourists than Mazatlan so we didn't stay too long either and the next day continued to Puerto Vallarta with even more tourists and the everlasting scorching sun. We stayed for a while (well, not even the whole afternoon, to be honest) but we visited La Bodeguita del Medio, nice pub with a character, and learned that among other places it has its sister also in Prague so when they gave us a "passport" we asked the waiter to write something down and maybe we'll receive a discount back home :)

Puerto Vallarta was our last coastal place, we went east after that, on a road that wasn't in our GPS but the map (oh yes, we finally found quite a good map, obviously the Mexicans don't call it a map but  "Guia Roji", just in case you ever need it) said it should be alright. And it  really was worth it. It was winding and narrow but it went up to the mountains, the palms changed to pines, the sun into foggy fresh air, it was amazing! And by dusk we reached a cute little town of Mascota ("a pet") and spent the night there, getting a proper sleep after all those hot coastal nights.

In the morning we set off to Guadalajara, quite a big city with a nice old town, although getting there was a bit problematic due to a traffic jam at the outskirts and loads of cars in the city itself. This and the all-present heat kind of poisoned our view of Guadalajara so we only strolled through the old town for a while, visiting the huge cathedral, and headed to Leon to surprise my friend Laura who was expecting us to come the next day.

Fortunately, we found each other (with the help from a guy in a cyber cafe), and then spent two great days in Leon, with Laura being a great guide. We visited the university and met a Czech professor Jiri who loves the Mexican weather so much he decided to stay for good, we went for dinner to a "corrida" pub and had pig skin with tomatoes, fried pig skin with lemon, and tequila with sangrita and lemon, and talked about all kinds of soup there are in Mexico. We also saw (although only from afar) the very centre of Mexico, el Cerro del Cubilete!

Z pobřeží jsme odbočili do vnitrozemí a teď (v pátek, 12.

Mazatlan, Mexico

It’s still bloody hot but we are learning to survive… We’ve been in Mazatlan for a few days now, staying in a cheap RV camp, and today we are leaving for Puerto Vallarta.

Mazatlan is quite touristy but it seems that the season hasn’t started properly yet, you can see an American only now and then J The old town is very pretty and cozy, with narrow little streets and palm trees, and houses with balconies and inner patios with fountains.
And yes, we have finally swum in the ocean! It’s warm and good for surfing (so you can’t really swim in it…).

Travel experiences:
We want to buy a new map of Mexico, as the one we have is not so much detailed and some smaller places are not in there. We ask at the gas stations where they either don’t have it or usually have it only not now, we asked at a hotel and they sent us to a stationery shop so we went to a stationary shop in a small shopping mall where they told us they don’t have any but the other stationary just outside will surely have what we are looking for. So we went to the other shop and the lady said yes, they had maps. Hooray! And do you want with or without names? What?? Well, with names, then..? OK, and how many do you want? What???? And then she brought an A4 (letter size) piece of paper with a black and white map of Mexico. So we are still looking…

Other experience:
The other day we were looking for a smaller town that should have a camp according to the map. First we couldn’t find the town as the signs here are not so good, then we couldn’t find the camp, and when we asked somebody they sent us to another town nearby where a camp should be. This town wasn’t in our map and with the quality of the signs again, we got lost. We arrived in some small town in the middle of nowhere and asked about a camp in a local corner shop. They didn’t know about any but there was an older couple there that offered us to go with them and spend the night in their place. Thank you once again, Trini and Maria, for everything!

Dobře, a kolik jich chcete? Cože???? A pak paní přinesla papír A4 s černobílou mapou Mexika.

We are in Mexico! It's very hot, very humid, and there are loads of insects everywhere... I just hope it'll get better or I'll get used to it or something, so far it's a bit unbearable...

Jsme v Mexiku!
